A 1936 view of Maxstoke station which, despite surface erosion to the platform, was still tidily maintained despite the lack of traffic. The stationmaster, a Mr Leary, retired in 1936 having never ever issued a ticket bearing the station's name. The following year the fixed distance and home signals were repainted and had new spectacles fitted despite Hampton station's being removed at the same time. Roger Waring notes in his book 'The Stonebridge Railway' states that about this time the station building was sold to the former stationmaster. However later in his book Roger notes that in 1960 following the death of Mrs Leary, by then just one 100 years old, the local authority condemned the property in September of that year and despite a local resident offering 'to buy the station from British Rail, and whilst they were prepared to accede to the request, the local authority was adamant. Maxstoke had to go.'
