Looking towards Ashchurch prior to alterations with an unknown
MR 0-6-0 standing at the head of a up local passenger service circa 1904. Bob
Essery states that the location of the locomotives lamp holders (used to hold
the lamps displaying the head code) are in their post-1903 position. He also
notes that 'the home signal on the short post (on the right) shown in image
'mre1340' cannot be seen in image 'mre563' but in
this author's opinion this maybe because this latter image does not show detail
beyond the platform. The barrow crossing would have been used by both staff
and passengers as there is no footbridge evident. The down water crane's fire
devil (brazier) which was evident in image 'mre563' is
missing which might indicate that it was removed during the summer period. The
advantages of the MR's angled station nameboard is seen in the view, the name
being easily discernible despite looking down the track.
