The fireman of an unidentified ex-LMS 'Stanier' locomotive is taking on water from the Midland water crane at the former Fiveways station. The closeness of the water crane to the tunnel meant that when locomotives were being topped up they would be emitting smoke inside the tunnel. In this instance the driver would be suffering the consequences whilst the fireman enjoys both the fresh air and sunshine. Topping up the locomotive at Fiveways meant that this was a job that didn't need to be done at New Street station , its next stop.
