Close up of image 'mrforg395' showing the original 1842 station building which incorporated both the old station master's house as well as the booking office, hall and waiting rooms. On the right the rear of the platform is protected by more examples of the distinctive Midland Railway fencing. This style of fencing was standard Midland Railway practice, a distinctive and expensive feature not seen on other railways. It is constructed using pitch pine and, based on observation and measurements at other locations, was painted with a mixture of tar and lamp oil. The dimensions of the fence are (in inches): Diagonals 3" x ¾" x 72" spaced 4½" apart. Horizontals 4" x 1½" spaced 8" above ground level then spaced 17" apart with posts 6" x 4" to a height of 66" pitched somewhat randomly approximately every 120".
