Harvington Station: mrhv571a

Close up showing the goods yard, its traffic and the passing loop in greater detail

Close up of image 'mrhv571' showing Harvington station's goods yard with a variety of vehicles stabled on the siding. The nearest vehicle in the siding is a Clerestory brake coach, its raised section in the centre of the roof being very distinctive design feature. The purpose of the raised section, was to bring outside light, fresh air, or both into the inner space. The Clerestory brake was probably used to handle some of the agricultural produce and might even been attached to passenger trains as soft fruits dispatched by passenger trains warranted a higher charge than produce sent by normal freight services. Full mineral wagons can be seen at the far end which in all probability would be filled with coal for the benefit of local coal merchants.
