An ex-LNER B1 4-6-0 locomotive is seen passing through Kingsbury station whilst at the head of an up fully fitted express freight train. To the left of the locomotive are the remains of the station building which had been demolished after British Railways had condemned the building. This meant that both staff and passengers had to make do with temporary timber huts. Toilet facilities were very basic and water was only available from a tap which frequently froze in winter. The state of the station was subject to correspondence in the paper as part of a campaign to obtain adequate accommodation. In the event British Railways decided to to close the station. The locomotive is thought to be No 61199 which was built by the North British Locomotive Company in June 1947 and was to remain in service until January 1967 when it was withdrawn from 50A York shed. An express freight train needed to be pipe fitted throughout its length with the automatic brake operative on NOT less than 90% of the vehicles. The maximum speed was 55 mph although a maximum speed of 60 mph could apply in respect of certain trains specifically indicated in the Working Timetable.
