LMS: Birmingham New Street to Tamworth
Kingsbury Station: mrk439
Ex-LMS 6P5F 2-6-0 'Crab' No 42791 is seen at the head of a
Derby to Birmingham Class 'D' express freight service as it passes through the
station on 8th March 1956. Class 'D' express freight services required at least
thirty per cent of the vans and wagons to be XP stock (fitted with vacuum
brakes) and for these to be attached to the rear of the engine to allow for
better braking necessary due to the higher speeds. Such services were therefore
allowed to use passenger routes when these were available and in this instance
there was a shorter route to Birmingham from Kingsbury.
