View of Kings Heath Signal Box taken on 3rd August 1969 a few weeks before its closure in September. The short siding beyond the signal box has been removed although the crossover to Ballast Sidings which was located under the bridge may still be in place, the shadow preventing a clear view. The two dark sets of sleepers, one on the up line and the other on the down line, show the point where the wires and rodding crossed from beneath the signal box to the up side of the main line. These would have controlled the signals and points operated from the up side of the line. The coal heaped on the platform was provided for the signalmen to use at night and in the winter to keep them warm. After closure of the yard this would have required a train to have stopped to discharge the coal, probably repeated at other signal boxes along the route.
