An Edwardian view of the station taken from the down platform looking across to the up platform

An Edwardian view of the station taken from the down platform looking across to the up platform. This view shows the platforms on both sides has been extended and are at a slightly higher height. This was quite common with stations built early in the evolution of railways as early trains were comprised of coaches based on stage coaches. Consequently early coaching stock reflected the stage coach practice of passengers embarked by climbing up into the coach from platforms initially not much higher than rail level. As stock became bigger and road on more substantial chassis the increased height compelled platforms to be raised. The introduction of the bogie meant carriages were even higher off the ground and platforms required raising to the level seen above similar to that we know today.
