LMS Route: Evesham to Birmingham
Kings Norton Station: mrkn790a
Close up of image 'mrkn790' showing Kings Norton's signal
box located to the West of the station which controlled access to the sidings
and the four running lines to and from Northfield. Bob Essery recalls in his
book DJ Norton's pictorial survey of Railways in the West Midlands that
whilst the sidings were primarily used for carriage storage they were pressed
in to action at times when freight traffic was heavy. In these circumstances
westbound trains started at Kings Norton instead of Washwood Heath with the
sidings being used to marshal the wagons into train order. To the best of Bob's
recollection, it was mostly mineral traffic for Westerleigh near Bristol.
