British Railways built 2-6-4T 4MT No 42054 departs from the carriage sidings with empty stock bound for New Street on 21st November 1955. On the left are grounded carriage and wagon bodies used by carriage cleaning and maintenance staff for mess facilities and storage. Built by Derby works in November 1950 No 42054 was a member of a class designed by Fairburn but with its roots in the 2-6-4T locomotives first designed by Fowler and refined by Stanier. As with most locomotives built by British Railways, No 42054 had a short working life being withdrawn in July 1964 from 9D Newton Heath shed to be scrapped in July 1964 by Crewe works.
