MR 4-4-0 No 524 double heads class mate MR 4-4-0 No 521 on a
down express train as it passes the carriage sidings on 30th July 1921. Both
were members of the MR's 483 class with No 524 being built at Derby works in
July 1898 whilst classmate No 521 was built by Sharp Stewart in December 1899.
Both had long lives with No 524 remaining in service until June 1954 before it
was withdrawn from 10B Preston shed to be scrapped by Derby works in the same
year. Its classmate No 521 remained in service for nearly two more years before
it was withdrawn in March 1956 from 20C Royston shed to be scrapped at Derby
works some time in 1956.
