MR 4-4-0 3P No 773 with oil tanks fitted to its tender is
seen working hard at the head of a train of clerestory coaches in 1921. A
number of locomotives were fitted for oil firing due to the severe shortage and
cost of coal in the immediate post-war period. They were soon reverted to
conventional coal firing when supplies became easier to obtain. Built as a
member of the MR's 2606 class at Derby works in July 1905, No 773 was to remain
in service until April 1940 when it was withdrawn from Derby shed to be
scrapped during July 1940 by Derby works.
