Lawley Street Goods Depot: mrls669
Another view of one of the Midland Railways' many heavy cart
horses used to deliver goods from Lawley Street Goods depot to businesses in
the local area. The photograph together with image 'mrls668' are clearly posed
to show off the horses as the wagon is the same number and carrying the same
load. The railway companies encouraged their staff to enter their horses in to
competitions as this was a great way to motivate people to take care of their
charges. Horses were an essential part of railway life not just in the
delivering of goods but also for shunting wagons in goods yards either where a
steam locomotive was not required on a constant basis or to supplement their
working.
