Midland Railway 2-4-0 1P No 174 is seen piloting Midland
Railway 4-4-0 2P No 368 on a passenger train on 16th July 1921. The length of
the train is not overly long and was, in the eye of many of the Midland
Railway's critics, a demonstration of the waste of the MR's policy of using
pilot locomotives on most lightly loaded trains. A train of this length would
not require double heading on the LNWR or GWR as they would use more powerful
locomotives. A member of the MR's class 1282 No 174 was built by Dubbs & Co
in February 1884 and remained in service until it was scrapped in July 1928 by
Derby works. The locomotive behind, No 368, was a member of the MR's 1738 class
and was also built at Derby works, in June 1886, it was to remain in service
until some time in July 1929 when it was withdrawn to be scrapped.
