An 1880s view of Nuneaton Abbey Street Station and Signal Box complete with large station name board. The first signal box erected at the time of the building of the second station can just be seen above the bridge and behind the slotted semaphore signals. The MR station sign announces not only the name of the station 'Nuneaton' but advises passengers that it was the 'Junction for Market Bosworth, Coalville, Moira and Ashby. Pete Lee states in his book 'The Railways of Nuneaton and Bedworth' that the MR used this branch to a much lesser extent than their rivals. In 1898 there were just two trains a day to the stations proudly listed on the station sign and by 1931, after grouping, all services had ceased. The MR journey time was the same as the LNWR's, approximately one hour. The LNWR had six departures each day with four calling at all stations terminating at Loughborough Derby Road and two which went express to Burton.
