Penns Station: mrp334b

Close up showing details of Penns station building including Posterboards, signage and platform lighting

Close up of image 'mrp334' showing details of Penns station building including Posterboards, signage and platform lighting. On careful inspection there are five posterboards mounted externally starting with a large unit above the bench seat. This posterboard has had its poster removed but all the others are carrying some kind of advertising or notice. The building has two large rooms which project out from a central portion - an I on its side - with flat roof single storey extensions on either side. From this oblique angle it would appear that in addition to the door seen on the return wall of the projection there was also a door centrally located. Whilst the Midland Railway was the first company to scrap Second Class accommodation - leaving only First and Third Class - it still provided in some stations segregated accommodation in the form of First Class, Ladies and a Gentlemen;s waiting room in addition to a general waiting room. The building above would also accommodate the station master's office, booking room and hall, the latter may also be the general waiting room, parcels office. The large lamps suspended on brackets are thought to be lit by oil and are positioned to provide lighting to this area of the station.
