LMS Route: Evesham to Birmingham

Ex-LMS 4-6-0 5MT No 44859 is seen passing Redditch South Signal Box with a Class H through freight service on 12th July 1965. The signalman has positioned himself by standing on the raised platform to receive the token protecting the southerly single section. The token was held in a pouch fixed to a large hoop which enabled the exchange to take place whilst the locomotive was still on the move. Built by Crewe works in December 1944, this Stanier 'Black 5' remained in service until November 1967 when it was withdrawn from 8H Birkenhead shed to be scrapped by J Cashmore of Great Bridge.
