Schematic of the 1932 diagram of Redditch showing the position
of water columns, signals boxes, ground frames and capacity of the sidings.
Being a LMS diagram they do not show non-LMS sidings or lines such as the Gas
Works. Bob Essery writes in his book on the line 'that the method of working as
shown above was straightforward. Down trains entering the yard would stop at
the down platform and set back over the trailing connection into the goods yard
running past the old goods shed (see image 'mrred1381b' for a view of the signals controlling
this procedure). There was a run round loop parallel with the main line so once
trains were 'inside' and clear of the main line there would not be any reason
to foul the main line when shunting. When the train was on the loop the
locomotive could uncouple and run round the train shunting from the north end
of the yard. Up trains entered the yard by setting back over the trailing
crossover by the locomotive shed and on to the loop line. This would have the
locomotive at the correct end for shunting and when the train was ready to
depart it would draw forward over the crossover to the up line'.
