Ex-LNWR G2a 0-8-0 No 49142 is seen standing on the reception
road used by Stockingford branch line. The locomotive was originally built by
Francis Webb, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LNWR, as a 'B' Class compound
locomotive. As with many of Webb's compound designs, they were rebuilt by his
successor George Whale in simple form and were acknowledged as being extremely
useful machines, They too were subject to development primarily with different
types of boilers with No 49142 having the latest G2a type fitted which it
retained until it was withdrawn from service in December 1962.
