Ex-MR 3P 4-4-0 No 710, a member of the MR's 2606 class,
stands alongside one of Saltley shed's many coal stacks as it prepares to leave
the shed on 2nd July 1938. The design of this locomotive class was officially
attributed to SW Johnson but owes more to his successor R Deeley who was CME of
the Midland Railway from 1909 to 1923. This design shared many similar features
to its MR 2P stablemate which R Deeley and then H Fowler further developed as
the MR's and later the LMS's Standard 2P design as seen in image 'mrsalt87'. Built as MR No 710 in January 1902 by Derby
works, No 710 retained its running number until it was withdrawn in March 1941
from Saltley shed to be scrapped in April 1941 by Derby works.
