LMS 0-6-0 Diesel shunters, Nos 7126 and 7128, are seen standing on the road adjacent to Saltley shed's water tank located next to No 2 roundhouse on 6th June 1948. The LMS had pioneered the use of diesel shunting locomotives in Great Britain because of the economic savings they offered both in terms of running costs, maintenance and operational costs. This class of diesel locomotive, ultimately numbering 120, was first built in 1945 although No 7129 was the last built under LMS ownership. Derived from an earlier batch of locomotives built by the LMS between 1939 and 1942, Nos 7126 and 7128 were later numbered by British Railways as Nos 12039 and 12041 with both remaining in service until October 1968 when they were finally withdrawn from service.
