LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Tamworth

Ex-LNER B1 class 4-6-0 No 61161 stands inside Saltley shed's No 3 roundhouse ready for its next trip. This locomotive had, like the other 'foreign' engines seen at Saltley, worked into Birmingham either on a passenger service to New Street or a freight service to Washwood Heath Sidings. Unless they had 'failed' they would normally work the balancing return trip. Built as LNER No 1161 in May 1947 by the Vulcan Foundry, No 61161 remained in service until December 1966 when it was withdrawn from 56A Wakefield shed.
