LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Tamworth

An unidentified British Railways Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 stands over an inspection pit inside Saltley No 3 roundhouse. Inspection pits were used by the fitters when a locomotive's running or inside valve gear required attention as well as the crew who would need to use it to oil and grease the same items. The 9F was an outside two-cylinder locomotive thereby minimising the amount of work required between the frames.
