An ex-LMS 4F 0-6-0 locomotive, running tender first, starts
the climb towards St Andrews Junction with Saltley's coaling towers in the
background on 4th December 1965. Geoff Dowling writes, 'this view is from
Duddeston Mill Road which was still cobbled at this time. Parked at the
kerbside is a 1962 Ford Thames van carrying a typical Birmingham registration
395 BVP, at that time VP registrations were reserved for commercial
vehicles'. John Griffiths of Invercargill in New Zealand adds, 'nice
reminder of my days at 21A. Bad weather must be forecast for later in the day
as we would always run engine first up the bank. Or., they would have relieved
the crew of that loco off an up freight, the fire in that case would be a mess,
(looks to be plenty of coal in bunker though for that scenario)'.
