LMS Route: Nuneaton to Birmingham New Street
LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Tamworth
Saltley Shed: mrsalt1612
Ex-LMS 8F 2-8-0 No 48629 and classmate No 48725 stand inside
the shed with BRCW Type 2 diesel locomotive D7570 on 28th November 1965. Both
locomotives were built at the Southern Railway's Brighton works, No 48629 being
built in June 1943 and No 48725 in September 1944. No 48629 was to remain in
service until September 1966 when it was withdrawn from 2E Saltley shed to be
scrapped by J Cashmores of Great Bridge. Classmate No 48725 remained in service
until August 1967 when it was withdrawn from 5B Crewe South shed to be scrapped
by J Buttigieg of Newport. D7570 was built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage
& Wagon Company in October 1963 and remained in service until June 1982
when as 25220 it was scrapped by Swindon works. Keith Long writes, 'D7570
was a regular at Leeds during these days, it used to work up on the overnight
Washwood Heath to Kingmoor fitted freights'.
