Ex-MR 3F 0-6-0 No 3624 stands out of service alongside Saltley shed's breakdown crane in September 1936. Bib Essery writes, 'the Class 3 0-6-0 goods engines were universally popular with enginemen. They were free steaming and while not as powerful as the larger Class 4s, they were often preferred for many turns of duty. This picture shows No 3624 at Saltley with 'wait orders' chalked on the bufferbeam. The railwayman on the extreme right of the picture is also waiting for his next turn of duty!' A member of the MR's 1873 Class No 3624 was built by Neilson Reid & Company circa 1899 and was to remain in service until May 1961 when it was withdrawn from 9G Gorton shed to be scrapped by the Gorton works.
