LMS 5MT 4-6-0 No 4920 is seen passing alongside Saltley's
coaling tower on its way out of the yard having just been coaled on 21st May
1949. The double number on the side of the cab, with one set above the other,
is a puzzle and might be one reason why DJ Norton took the photograph. Although
the LMS adopted different liveries throughout its 25 year life which saw the
number produced with different sized numbers and positioned in different places
on the cab, it is hard to give a sensible explanation for the use of two sets
of numbers of apparently the same size and type. Built at Crewe works in
December 1945, No 4920 remained in service until late 1967 when it was
withdrawn from Springs Branch shed in Wigan to be scrapped by Drapers Ltd of
Hull. Richard Strange writes 'This locomotive was withdrawn during the week
(seven days) ending on 2nd December 1967.'
