A plan of Saltley shed's No 3 Roundhouse which was opened in 1900 and shows the different lengths of roads that ran off the turntable because the 'roundhouse' was square. At the bottom of the plan is the entrance to the roundhouse and to its right the Sand Drying Plant both of which can be seen in image 'mrsalt110a'. At the top of the plan is the entrance to Saltley's original 'roundhouse' which was late designated No 1 roundhouse or shed. Indicated on the plan are the smoke ducts which were a feature inside the shed and as shown these were present at the front on all roads adjacent to the turntable. However where or whether a second smoke duct was fitted depended on the length of the individual road. All roads had inspection pits to enable the driver and fitters to gain access to the underside of the locomotive which was essential for locomotives fitted with inside valve motion as well as gaining access to bearings etc. The columns denoted are the buildings supports and not water columns which were available outside in the yard. Finally the plan shows that in addition to the roof lights the shed had windows to three sides to maximise daylight within the building.
