LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Tamworth

BR Standard 5MT 4-6-0 No 73069 is seen being repaired by one of Saltley's fitters on 22nd November 1964. On the right is ex-LMS 4-6-0 Jubilee class No 45674 'Duncan', built in December 1935 by Crewe works, but without its name plates having been withdrawn week ending 10th October 1964 having arrived at Saltley in March 1963. On paper it had been allocated to Crewe North during the week of its withdrawal but as can be seen from the above it had never made the journey. The BR Standard was also built at Crewe works, in November 1954, and was allocated to Leamington Spa at the time the photograph was taken and was to be the last of its class in service being withdrawn from Carnforth shed during the final month of steam in August 1968.
