LMS Route: Hampton in Arden to Whitacre
B&DJR Documentation: mrsbr1869
Schematic drawings of B&DJR 1839 First and Second Class
carriages and a Midland Railway Third Class Carriage. The drawings clearly show
the influence of stagecoaches on early railway carriage design. Both B&DJR
carriages have a seat on top of the carriage for a guard as well as rails to
secure luggage on the roof. Prior to 1880 Kirtley four-wheeled coaches were
used for passengers. SW Johnson, who succeeded Kirtley as Locomotive
Superintendent in 1873, was the inspiration behind Thomas Clayton's superior
six-wheeled bogie coach. Upon its introduction, an arc-roof 1st/3rd brake (with
smoking and non-smoking compartments) provided very comfortable accommodation
until the withdrawal of passenger services on 31st December 1916.
