LMS Route: Water Orton to Walsall

Sutton Park Station: mrspk343

Looking towards Water Orton from the Walsall end of Sutton Park station's island platform

Looking towards Water Orton from the Walsall end of Sutton Park station's island platform. The locomotive has no lamps showing indicating that they have just been removed after the train was terminated. The locomotive would have had displayed a single lamp with white lens on top of the smokebox immediately above the number. This configuration indicated that it was a Class B service - an ordinary passenger train. Before the locomotive moved to run around the train (by using the line on the opposite platform) the single lamp would be moved to the central position of the three lamp holders fixed above the bufferbeam. This would indicate to station staff - in particular the signalman - that the locomotive was a Class G working, namely it was working light engine. The fireman would be required to mount two lamps, one at either end of the locomotive with a white lens fitted in the direction of travel and a red lens at the rear.
