The six wheel carriage next to the Guards van was to provide the P & W crew with mess facilities during the occupation of the line. The relaying of the track under the ballast train has also led to sleepers with chairs fitted being placed along the platform's length. The use of 3 plank wagons, most appear to be empty, was to aid the discharging of them by hand. Built by the North British Locomotive Company in October 1925 No 4069 remained in service for 38 years before it was withdrawn from Springs Branch shed at Wigan in October 1963.
