LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Tamworth

Tamworth High Level Station: mrthl1831

Looking northwards along the High Level up platform with the short siding on the left serving the cattle dock. The bench seat seen drawn across the platform was a rudimentary barrier to prevent passengers from going beyond this point. This cattle dock was served by a long drive best seen in the aerial view of the station (see image 'mrthl1112'). On the left is what appears to be the original 'covered walkway' as seen in image 'lnwr_tam1255' and earlier views. The most obvious difference being the windows which are arched in this view but not in a later view in image 'mrthl1829'. The colour of the structure, and on the other timber structures of the platform, plus the lack of British Railway's corporate signage would date this photograph as being before 1954 and probably a little earlier. The unidentified ex-LMS 8F 2-8-0 locomotive is on a southbound Class 8 through or empty mineral train. The Signal Box was opened by the LMS on 8th August 1925 and remained operational until 10th August 1969.
