Looking north towards Derby from the end of the High Level
up platform with a MR water crane and signal in the foreground. The lamppost on
the left would have been gas lit although as it appears to be without a glass
it looks no longer in use. To its right is a 'fire-devil' or brazier which
would have been moved closer to the water crane during winter in order to
prevent the crane from freezing up. A chain tethers the water crane to prevent
it from rotating in the wind and obstructing the main line. The cast-iron
Midland Railway notice behind the brazier would be warning passengers not to
cross the line to the other platform and stating the various penalties for
doing so. The two rakes of vehicles on the left are stabled in the two sidings
which ran behind the station the nearest one leading on to a turntable. The
connecting line between the two routes, which ran between the LNWR's up line
and the MR's up line, was located out of view behind these two sidings.
