Looking north-west with the lines to Derby on the left and
the lines to Leicester on the right circa 1949. An unidentified ex-MR 3F 0-6-0
locomotive is running tender first on a down Kingsbury to Birmingham coal train
whilst on the down goods line to its right a pair of former Midland 3F 0-6-0
class mates stand at the head of another coal train. The timbers crossing the
rails formed a 'barrow crossing' and were for railway staff only, primarily for
the use of transporting luggage, parcels and other light goods by porters
trolley or barrow. The sign beneath the lamp post on the left states 'Beware
of Trains'. The water tower has been strategically located to provide water
to replenish the tanks of locomotives standing at the end of the down goods
line. On the left are a number of other open wagons which appear to be carrying
a full load. These are most likely wagons being used by local merchants who
would use the hardstanding on the left to gain access to the wagons. It was
standard railway practice to allow recipients of full loads to have three days
grace after their arrival after which they were charged for the use of the
wagon.
