A late 19th century view of Fenny Compton station as one of the E&WJR's Beyer Peacock 0-6-0s stands 'wrong road' adjacent to the Stratford upon Avon platform. On the line to the right is an open wagon whilst behind the locomotive is possibly a passenger coach. In all probability the locomotive has brought a mixed train (part passenger and part freight) from Stratford upon Avon and is now shunting the yard at Fenny Compton by separating the freight wagons from the passenger vehicles. Once it has removed any wagon(s) from Fenny Compton's goods yard and replaced them if required, the locomotive will marshal its train with the carriage behind the tender and wagons at the rear. Immediately in front of the locomotive are a set of brick steps. This was a common feature at many stations, irrespective of operating company, to facilitate members of staff to cross between the two platforms without resorting to using the barrow crossings located at the end of the platform. On the left is a part view of the first signal box provided at Fenny Compton. Another view of the signal box can be seen in image 'smjfc177'.
