Passengers prepare to board the Ro-Railer during one of its
fare-paying tests in April 1932. The starting handle device at the bottom of
the radiator might confuse many younger people but this was once a standard
feature on all petrol and diesel engined road vehicles. A car starting handle
was a mechanical crank handle by which a person may manually turn the engine of
a car, so as to start the engine even if the battery is flat or the starter
motor has failed. The practicality of this approach and the handiness with
which it can get you out of the predicament of being stuck and in need of
calling for the breakdown recovery services are undeniable.
