Ex-LMS 4F 0-6-0 No 44434 is proving to be very hard work for
driver and fireman turning it by hand on 8th April 1958. Throughout the period
of the LMS and into the days of British Railways the six-coupled 3F and 4F
engines were the established motive power of the line. Good all round work
horses accommodating passenger and freight trains. This scene is on April 8,
1958 as 44434 is turned laboriously by hand. Just visible in the distance is a
train of tipper trucks held on the coaling stage siding, a portent of what
would finally displace the work of the line.
