Ex-LMS 4F 0-6-0 No 44175 running tender first pilots
classmate No 44015 on a Class K freight service to Broom on 24th April 1955.
British Railways categorised a Class K as providing freight, mineral or ballast
train stopping at intermediate stations; branch freight train. Whilst not
unknown for locomotives to run smokebox to smokebox it wasn't a popular
configuration as both crews would be subject to the fine coal dust blowing in
their eyes through their journey. The working horse on the right pulling its
farm cart was fairly common still in the 1950s. It was in the 1960s with the
growing economy and cheaper petrol costs that they largely disappeared from our
roads.
