E&WJR 0-6-0 No 8, a former LNWR 'DX Goods' locomotive, stands alongside the coal stack at Stratford upon Avon shed

E&WJR 0-6-0 No 8, a former LNWR 'DX Goods' locomotive, stands alongside the coal stack at Stratford upon Avon shed. The three locomotives bought had been fitted with new fireboxes and boilers under Webb but not to his specification retaining the Ramsbottom pattern and dimensions; shorter firebox, larger boiler at a lower pitch and a top hinged smokebox door. To the left is a manually operated travelling crane which in this circumstances would have been used to stack the coal alongside the track. Built at Crewe in 1863, No 8 was purchased from the LNWR in December 1881 (as LNWR No 1945 previously as No 809) and after receiving the wheels of DX Goods classmate No 9 in 1903, survived in service until 1911 when it was withdrawn to be scrapped.
