SMJ No 39, a 15 ton six-wheel brake van built for the
E&WJR by Harrison & Camm Ltd of Rotherham. Dick Riley and Bill Simpson,
in their book on the line, state its specification was:
'Length 12ft; outside platforms 17ft 6in; outside buffers
20ft. Width of body 7ft 9in, wheel base 5ft 6in; distance to wheel to wheel
centres, spoked wheels distance of the wheels apart 11ft. Axleboxes cast iron
with grease lubrication. Buffer height 3ft 5in. Underframe steel channels
riveted to angle knees. Body framed with oak and cased inside and outside, door
in centre both ends. Roof deal boards 1in thick tongued and grooved and covered
with canvas bedded in white lead. Fitted inside with stove and locker and rails
for brakesman's use. Screw brakes with blocks acting on both sides of six
wheels. Vehicle ballasted with cast iron Kentledge blocks to a tare of 15 tons.
An obvious use for such a vehicle would undoubtedly be for the iron-ore trains
from Blisworth. A similar type was built for the Lancashire. Derbyshire &
East Coast Railway'.
