LMS Route: Stratford Midland Junction - The Shakespeare Route

E&WJR and SMJ - Locomotives and Rolling Stock: smjsa382

Two former LNWR 0-6-0 'DX Goods' locomotives, E&WJR No 8 on the left and E&WJR No 9 on the right stand next to the coal stack at Stratford upon Avon shed circa 1900. E&WJR No 9 was very camera shy as this is the only known photograph of the locomotive, albeit just its sloping smokebox. One obvious reason being that of the three ex-DX locomotives the other two had been rebuilt by the LNWR in 1878 (No 7) and 1880 (No 8) and therefore remained in service longer, No 9 being withdrawn in 1903 to donate its wheels to No 8 which was in much better mechanical condition.
