SMJ 0-6-0 No 2311, formerly SMJ No 16 and seen stabled on
the roads in front of Stratford on Avon shed adjacent to a SMJ loco coal wagon,
was the last of the three (SMJ No 14 to 16) Beyer Peacock 0-6-0 locomotives
delivered between 1903 to 1906. The three locomotives were able to handle up to
35 wagons and between Olney and Broom only had to stop for water at Byfield and
were considered just as useful on passenger services. This locomotive was
subject to the fitting of Isaacson's valve gear in 1910 thought to have
occurred to follow its use on SMJ No 17 and No 18 in 1909. It is believed that
during 1919 it regained its Marshall valve gear and also received some minor
modifications when it visited Derby works in July 1923 including being
repainted and being allocated LMS No 2309.
