Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str3080
Looking East along Platform 6 beneath the 'temporary' canopy
structure towards Coventry in 1963. The cheerless vista looking east from the
western end of platform 6, the view dominated by the massive steel girders of
the makeshift canopy arrangement erected after the second world war following
the dismantling of Cowper's great trainshed. It is sad to reflect that this
view is from a similar viewpoint to that of image 'lnwrbns_str2877'. The only common points of
reference are the platforms, permanent way and the 1854 ornamental ironwork
around the subway ramp which looks sadly out of place here. A glimpse of the
Rotunda tower can be seen in the sky between the girders, now nearing
completion, part of a brave new world which would not include the smoke
blackened remains of the 19th century New Street Station.
