Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str405

Looking towards the West end of the station along platform 2 as LNWR 2-2-2 'Small Bloomer' No 1816 'Vandal' stands on one of the centre roads

Looking towards the West end of the station along platform 2 as LNWR 2-2-2 'Small Bloomer' No 1816 'Vandal' stands on one of the centre roads circa 1885. The ramp seen in the middle distance of platform 2 connected to the subway that spanned the full width of the Eastern end of the newly enlarged station. The steel girders and timber infill carrying the railway over the subway can be seen in the immediate foreground. The section of the access ramp and subway that passed under platform 2 was covered by timber planking as can be seen in the above photograph. Examination of the picture shows stone paving to the platform surface on this side of the subway and to the platform surface on either side of the ramp for some distance towards the photographer. The timber planking not becoming the full width of the platform until approximately halfway. This photograph was taken on the same day in September 1885 as images 'lnwrbns_str402', 'lnwrbns_str1866' and was probably associated with opening of the extension to New Street station.
