Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str422
Looking West from under Navigation Street bridge towards the
smoke filled tunnel that commenced at Suffolk Street with New Street No 5
Signal Cabin to the right. Although its only a little over eighteen months
since the signal gantry was painted (as seen in image 'lnwrbns_str399') it is now much blackened with
the smoke and soot from some of the 370 trains that arrive and depart from New
Street each day in 1954 carrying some 2 million passengers per year. Mike
Hitches wrote in article in British Railways Illustrated Volume 2 No 5
that eight trains could use the station at once and that the station master had
a staff of some 600 people.
