An Edwardian photograph of Marton station with staff from the station and a platelayer posed for the camera. This early photograph of the station shows the section of the down platform nearest to the camera to be formed in timber with timber planking, laid at 90º to the track, resting on timber piers. All other later photographs show the platform constructed in brick. Why this was necessary is unknown as timber platforms were very common and indeed had been used for the up platform which remained thus to the station's closure. It is the assertion of the writer that in all probability the original platform to the single line station was the brick platform seen at the Rugby end of the station. The section of platform formed using timber was only constructed when the track was doubled and at the same time as the waiting room and booking office was built. This meant that the station master's house, and what became the ladies waiting room, had to have their floor levels raised. This accounts for why the top of the door to the waiting room and booking office, which front onto this section of platform, is higher than the doors to both the station master's house and ladies waiting room - as seen in image 'lnwrmart1327'.
