The springing of tenders changed over the years between the 19th and 20th centuries. Initially they were placed above the running plate which meant that the coal space had to be narrower to accommodate the springing. By the time No 8455 was built the springs were placed below the tender's running plate which allowed the tender to be built the full width of the chassis allowing for a greater capacity in holding water and coal.
