Winson Green Station
Winson Green railway station was a railway station in
England, built by the London and North Western Railway on their Stour Valley
Line and opened on 1st November 1876. It served the Winson Green area of
Birmingham. The station originally consisted of two platforms, one either side
of the double tracked line. The main booking office was located at road level
facing on to Winson Green Road and bridged both the up and down running lines
with steps down to the platforms. On the two platforms timber framed and clad
waiting rooms were erected, the one on the up platform definitely accommodating
a general and a ladies waiting room. In 1889 the relief line from New Street to
Walsall was built which required Winson Green to accommodate an extra set of
double tracked lines. This required the original up platform to become an
island platform, the other side of the island platform being to accommodate the
down platform to Walsall. The fourth and up platform for traffic from Walsall
was built opposite this platform and was reached via a covered passenger
footbridge from the original booking office. The Railway Clearing House's
Handbook of Railway Stations records that the station served only passengers
with a parcels facility. Like many inner city stations Winson Green station
could not compete with Birmingham City's bus services and therefore closed on
26th August 1957. Both the Birmingham to Wolverhampton line and the relief loop
line to Walsall still run through the site of the station today.
